After a long winter, your children or students are probably eager to get outside and enjoy the spring weather next month. Our DIY Caterpillar Magnets can add to their excitement while also serving as a great school art project. Follow along to see how you can make your own.

Supplies

Your magnets can be purchased right here at Apex Magnets by visiting our online store. All magnets necessary for this project will be linked in the full supply list below. We even offer same-day shipping if you place your order by 3 PM EST. All other supplies can be purchased at your favorite craft store. 

 

Gather these supplies:

 

  • Clothespins 
  • Colored pom poms
  • Disc magnets (4mm x 3mm)
  • Tacky glue
  • Googly eyes

Steps

This craft is perfect for children of all ages, but we recommend adult supervision while creating these colorful caterpillars. Encourage your kids to make multiple versions of these insects with different colors to keep the excitement going for hours!

 

Follow these steps:

 

  • Gather all materials.
  • Determine which pom poms you would like to use on your first caterpillar.
  • Place glue along one side of your clothespin. 
  • Press each pom pom down on the glue until one side of the clothespin is covered. Note that the end that clamps together will be the head, so make sure the color you want is placed there. You should also place your pom poms at least ¼” in from the ends.
  • Once dry, glue two googly eyes to the head. You can either place the glue on the back of the eyes or put two dabs on the pom pom before pressing the eyes on. Let them dry.
  • Flip over your caterpillar and put a magnet at each end. Wait for it to dry.
  • Now you can use your new friend to hang up items!
