DIY Magnet Craft: Spring Weather Checker
You might know the popular saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” and no matter where you live, we all know how unpredictable spring weather can be. Rainy days might mean more time indoors, but it can be fun for young kids to play weatherperson during a season with so much variety.
To combine education and crafting, we’re sharing this magnet DIY made up of a cloud, the sun, a raindrop, a rainbow, and a flower to help little ones predict the weather. Thanks to the magnets, this can be kept on the kitchen fridge or even on desks for daily weather checks. Whichever way you choose to use these adorable spring magnets, though, the kids will have fun with it! Just remember that when handling magnets children should be under adult supervision, with adults handling the magnets at all times.
What you’ll need:
- Pipe cleaners
- Scissors
- A few 10mm x 1mm Neodymium Disk Magnets
- Glue
- Pom-Poms
- White and blue craft foam
- First, use scissors to cut out a cloud shape from the white craft foam.
- Glue a 10mm x 1mm Neodymium disk magnet securely onto the back of the white foam cloud.
- Form a blue or gray pipe cleaner into a similar cloud shape and glue it around the edges of the foam cloud.
- Let everything dry and then you’re ready to use this one for cloudy days!
- Cut out a teardrop shape from the blue craft foam
- Glue another 10mm x 1mm Neodymium disk magnet to the back of the foam.
- Form the blue pipe cleaner into a similar raindrop shape and size then glue it to the foam cut out.
- Let them dry and you’ve got a perfect rainy day weather magnet!
- Using the orange pipe cleaners, form one or two into a zig-zag shape mimicking the rays of the sun.
- Twist a yellow pipe cleaner into a circle, swirling it in towards the center.
- Position the yellow circle in the middle of the orange sun rays and wrap the rays around the circle. Twist the end of the orange pipe cleaner into the yellow center to secure them together.
- Take your magnet and glue it to the back of the yellow circle and you’re done! The sun is perfect for representing warm and bright spring weather.
- Take your pipe cleaners in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet and bend each of them into arch shapes.
- Align the red arch on top, then orange, yellow, and so on until you have a full rainbow and glue the pipe cleaners together and let dry.
- Glue a magnet onto the back of the pipe cleaners and let it dry again! Now you’re left with a cheerful rainbow to display after a rainstorm.
- Using any bright-colored pipe cleaner, form a few of them into petals by making loops around by wrapping it around two fingers.
- Take a pom-pom of your favorite color and glue it to the middle of the petals.
- Using a green pipe cleaner, make a stem and glue it to the bottom of your flower.
- Secure a magnet to the back of the flower near the pom-pom using glue. After it dries, you have an adorable flower magnet to show off during the spring season!
