Maglev trains are known for their fast speeds and utilization of  magnetic levitation. In exciting news, more breakthroughs could soon be on the horizon.

Magnetic Repulsion in Maglev Trains

Jiangxi University and Chinese transportation organizations recently touted the completion of a  test track for its new maglev line. What makes the new track stand out is the fact that the train is suspended in the air. This is possible through repulsion caused by rare earth magnets in the arm of the train and the rail, generating speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. The test track currently measures in at just under a half mile but will expand to over 4.5 miles once the proper tests are completed. The train itself can hold up to 88 passengers.  Researchers say there are other big changes when comparing this line to other maglev trains. For instance, the technology is cheaper and will only create small amounts of electromagnetic radiation since a small amount of electricity is needed to move the train along. Other trains can reach higher speeds, but can negatively impact the surrounding area by generating a larger electromagnetic field. The lifespan of the magnets will be extended as well due to the use of the previously mentioned earth magnets. This is a significant change since officials reported issues with a loss of magnetism over time with other trains. An expansion could be near, too. The China Media Group says these lines can be placed in all kinds of areas throughout the country, like along the water and deserts.
