However, as with anything in life, it’s worth knowing how to handle these powerful, versatile tools safely. In the interest of keeping you, your loved ones - and yes, even your magnets - safe, we think it’s important that you know how to use magnets the right (non-injury-inducing) way! Let’s take a quick stroll through using these useful, educational tools: Pinch Me? If you’re not careful when handling magnets, it’s possible to get pinched. And no, you’re not dreaming - strong magnets with a powerful attraction don’t care what gets in the way. Skin on your fingers, hands, or other body parts isn’t enough to stop a strong magnet. Very strong magnets have even been known to break fingers. So, make sure you handle your magnets with great care! Kids & Magnets While we love kids, we don’t think kids and magnets are a great fit! Small neodymium magnets are dangerous when swallowed - as is any other non-food item. We don’t recommend that small children handle or play with neodymium magnets, because they can be dangerous and represent a choking hazard. Magnets also should never be inserted into any body part - an especial risk when kids are involved. Medical Devices & Magnets Individuals with a pacemaker or similar medical device should not handle neodymium magnets. The strong magnetic fields of the magnets can affect the operation of such devices, causing them to malfunction. To be safe, these magnets should not be allowed near people who have medical devices that may be impacted by magnets. Protect Your Data While it’s not a physical injury, losing personal property can be an emotional pain. Avoid losing personal data or property by understanding how neodymium magnets work with magnetic media. Things like floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic I.D. cards, cassette tapes, video tapes or other such devices can be seriously damaged by neodymium magnets. Electronics such televisions, VCRs, computer monitors and other CRT displays can also be damaged - so use magnets around these devices with care. While magnets and magnetic fields are generally harmless, they are still tools. Like any tool, you should understand how to properly and safely use them before you begin with any project.
