We all know the feeling of panic when scrambling around for a last minute Valentine’s Day gift. Valentine’s Day, after all, is a holiday specifically geared toward displaying your love and affection for your significant other (and other loved ones in your life). Finding the perfect gift that has purpose and meaning can be difficult in today’s world of cheesy cards, unoriginal flower bouquets and been-there-done-that boxes of chocolates. One way you can prove your love with gift-giving is to create a DIY gift. Do-it-yourself projects not only make great presents, but are often more meaningful than buying one in a store. This DIY is not only a blast to make, but also a wonderful gift for someone to display in their home or office. This Valentine’s Day String Art Magnetic DIY craft is also easy to create, using minimal supplies. You can also make this magnetic plaque for friends and family to celebrate the holiday! Supplies You’ll Need:
  • Small wooden plaque.
  • Wood stain (any color).
  • Nails with a head.
  • Red yarn.
  • Heart stencil (made out of paper).
  • Hot glue gun.
  • ⅜” x ⅛” disc magnets.
Instructions for Your Valentine's Day String Art Project:
  1. Cut a piece of paper that will cover the front slab of the square wooden plaque. Use a print-out or free-hand a heart by drawing dots in a heart shape. Make sure the dots are evenly spread out.
  2. Lay the paper on the wood. Tape it down on the ends to secure in place.
  3. Lightly tap the nails into the dots until all the dots have nails in them. Once you think you have all of the nails in the correct places, you can hammer them down further with the hammer. Hammer them down enough that the nail cannot move, but still have enough room to wrap string.
  4. Rip the paper off the wood and nails once all nails are hammered in.
  5. To wrap the string, tie the end of the string to one nail then begin to wrap the string around random nails to create the “string art.” Try not to wrap the string around nails that are directly beside each other, but besides that, you can have complete freedom to wrap your string however you’d like.
  6. It can be up to you when you think you’ve used enough string. When you are finished wrapping the nails with yarn, tie it around a nail and cut the remainder of the string.
  7. On the back of the wooden plaque, use the hot glue gun to glue on 2 magnets. One on the left side and one on the right. Let the glue dry and magnets set.
This is a great gift for someone to display on any magnetic surface in their room, fridge, office file cabinet, etc. If you’re looking for more crafts to make as gifts for holidays or birthdays, head over to our Magnetic Crafts blog.
